Knot Your Usual Mooring Company

Moorings are made up of six key components they are as follows: Mooring Block, Bottom Chain, Top Chain, Mooring Buoy, Pennants and Shackles.

These components do require inspection and maintenance and over time and need to be replaced as needed to protect your boat’s safety. Below are estimates of how long these mooring components will last.

Please note: “It is the permit holders responsibility to ensure that all components of his mooring system are constantly maintained in serviceable condition. Unsatisfactory maintenance of the mooring is subject to forfeiture of the mooring permit.” This is from Manual For Marblehead Waters.

Mooring Blocks will last at least ten years; many will last closer to twenty years.

Bottom Chain will last between four and ten years. The length of time your bottom chain will last will depend on several factors including; size of chain, and the location of the mooring. Bottom chain will last the longest on muddy bottoms and will were out the fastest on sandy bottoms. .

Top Chain will last for two seasons. Occasionally in more exposed areas top chain can last as short as one season before it needs to be replaced. We inspect your top chain each spring and fall and will replace when needed.

Shackles are replaced when we replace your top chain and or bottom chain. They may be replaced sooner if they show signs of significant wear or deterioration. During our regular inspections.

Pennants will last several years, any here from five to ten years when used when used correctly. Normal wear and tear and especially stormy weather eventually wear down pennants and require us to replace them as needed. We inspect your pennants on a regular basis and will replace them as necessary.

Mooring Buoy will last several years; generally most mooring buoy will last close to ten years. Buoys are inspected regularly and replaced as necessary.
